In 1989 the Johannesburg Wargames Club moved to the Old Edwardian Society at 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton. The club meets every Sunday afternoon from 14H00 to 18H00 unless: 1. The meeting is on Christmas day, or 2. There is a national or provincial championship being played, we'll be there instead. |

5th OLD EDWARDIAN DOUBLES WARGAMES CHAMPIONSHIPS
Even though there was a larger turnout than usual at the 5th OLD EDWARDIAN DOUBLES WARGAMES CHAMPIONSHIPS held at the Old Edwardian Society, 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton, Johannesburg, on 4 and 5 September 2004, no-one was really ready for the outstanding play at such chhampionships.
Most of the top doubles teams were present at the country's premier doubles championship as well as a number of new teams who were attempting to 'wet their spears' for the first time.
Of course, all the safe money was on the top two teams consisting of Ingo Haferung and Dominic Bauer in the first team, and Colin Robertson and Harry Parker in the second.
Indeed all things started to plan with Colin Robertson's team taking an early lead with Ingo Haferung's team battling away in fourth place.
However, the schock was to come from young Alexis Roodt (of Pretoria Boys High School) who had teamed up with Colin Webster.
Alexis, with great skill, held of Ingo Haferung's team to a draw, then drew with the team lying in second place to move his team into fourth place at the beginning of play on the Sunday morning.
In the first game on the Sunday morning, the veteran team of Nicholas Smuts and Anton Verster threw everything that they had at Alexis, who managed to smash through their center, and narrowly miss routing their army to maintain his team's position in fourth place.
As usual, the final round decided the fate of the championship, Alexis played a truly inspired game to take a resounding victory which allowed him to creep into first place.
The results are as follows:

13th OLD EDWARDIAN WINTER WARGAMES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 13th OLD EDWARDIAN WINTER WARGAMES CHAMPIONSHIPS were held at the Old Edwardian Society, 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton, Johannesburg, on 14 and 15 August 2004.
As usual there was a good turnout to further endorse the championship as one of the most important club championships in the country.
While the Premier section of the Ancients figure games is still dominated by the Old Edwardian Wargames Club, the High School section is witnessing a great degree of fluidity due to the incredible influx of new players. Certainly Dominic Aphane of St Enda's High School in Hillbrow is leaving his mark in the section, and is fast becoming a force with which to be reckoned.
Again, in yet another championship, Technikon Witwatersrand has left an indelible impression in the draughts section. The students from TWR are quickly becoming invincible, and it seems as though no other club can launch an effective challenge to them.

20 May 2004
At a glittering Sportsman of the Year Dinner held on the 20 May 2004, a jovial, and somewhat frivilous, Wargames delegation partook in, as usual, a well catered meal.
Go Agdervanic Catering!
The event and cameraderie would have been enough, but it was not to be......
Richard Ligault was a finalist for the Sportsman of the Year award and was presented with a set of Somerset Crystal brandy glasses.
Hmm, we all now know where Richard is if he is not at the club..... at home sipping brandy.
Well done Richard!
However, the cherry on the top was............
Melissa Kupczyk.
Melissa Kupczyk was awarded the Sheila Webster Trophy for the Junior Sportsperson.
Wow!
Well done Mellissa.
It may interest members to note that in 2002 the trophy was shared by Matthew Strachan and by that cricketer - Graham Smith.
The success of one is the success of all.
Thank you dear member for helping our players (Richard and Melissa) to achieve such awards.
